Lucky 15 Bet: Bonus, Consolation and Real Returns

Every calculator on this subject gets the 15 lines right. The part that decides what actually lands in the account is the bonus, and the bonus is the part the calculators either skip or guess at, because it is governed by five qualification conditions published separately from the bet‑type page⁠.

What the 15 bets are

Three operators publish the same composition, which makes this the one part of the subject with no ambiguity at all⁠:

“Lucky 15 (4 selections) comprises: 4 Singles, 6 Doubles, 4 Trebles and 1 Fourfold.”

“A Lucky 15 consists of fifteen bets involving four selections. You will have four singles, six doubles, four trebles and one four-fold.”

The singles are the whole point of the product. They are what separates a Lucky 15 from a Yankee, which is the same four selections without them⁠:

“Just one successful selection guarantees a return.”

That guarantee is the reason a Lucky 15 costs 15 units instead of the Yankee's 11. You are paying 4 extra units for the four singles, and those four singles are also what the consolation attaches to⁠.

The winner-count return table

Four horses, all at 5/1, 1 unit per line, 15 units staked. Bonus and consolation applied as published by William Hill. Every figure below is the gross return including stake on the lines that survive⁠.

Read the fourth and fifth rows together, because they are the two the rest of this page is about. One winner is a 4.00 unit loss rather than a 9.00 unit loss, entirely because of a rule that is not on the bet slip. And a non-runner alongside three winners returns 685.00, roughly double the 342.00 you would have collected had that fourth horse simply run and lost, while at the same time destroying any claim to the bonus⁠.

The gap between the top row and the second row is the number worth internalising before placing the bet. Going from three winners to four multiplies the return by more than seven. A Lucky 15 is not a spread-the-risk bet in any meaningful sense, it is an accumulator with a small refund attached⁠.

The one-winner consolation

The published rule is short and it is the same across all three Lucky bets⁠:

“Only 1 winner - double the odds”

Doubling the odds means doubling the fractional price, not the return. A winner at 5/1 is settled at 10/1, so 1 unit returns 11.00 instead of 6.00. Worked across a range of prices on a 15 unit outlay⁠:

The break-even line is exact and it is worth remembering: with a 1 unit Lucky 15, a single winner at 7/1 returns your 15 units and nothing more. Below 7/1 the consolation softens a loss. Above 7/1 a single winner turns the whole ticket profitable on its own⁠.

Two limits on it. The consolation only exists where exactly one selection wins, so two winners at short prices can genuinely return less than one winner at a long price. And on an each-way Lucky 15 it applies to half the bet only⁠:

“In each way bets, the consolation applies only to the win part.”

The 15, 31 and 63 bonus ladder

The all-winners bonus is not a flat 10 percent across the family. It climbs with the number of selections, and the Lucky 63 is the only one of the three that pays anything for falling one short⁠:

“Bonus: 5 winners 10% added to total returns. 6 winners 25% added to total returns”

That middle column is the one nobody mentions. Put numbers on it with six selections at 5/1 and a 1 unit stake, so a 63 unit outlay⁠:

• Five winners from six in a Lucky 63: 16,806.00 on the lines, winnings of 16,743.00, plus the 10 percent consolation of 1,674.30⁠, for 18,480.30⁠.
• Four winners from five in a Lucky 31: 2,400.00 on the lines, and no bonus of any kind⁠.

Same shortfall of one selection, and one of them pays an extra 1,674.30 while the other pays nothing. If you habitually bet five selections, the published rules say the sixth selection buys you a partial-bonus tier that the five selection bet does not have. Whether that sixth horse is worth backing is a handicapping question, but the structural difference is real and it is not priced into anything you see on the slip⁠.

Is the bonus on winnings or on returns?

This is the one place where the published pages contradict each other, and the difference is small but it is money. The bet‑types page says returns⁠:

“Bonus: 4 winners 10% added to total returns”

The dedicated bonus rules page states the general principle⁠, which resolves it⁠:

“Bonus and consolation payments are based solely on winnings and don't include any stakes.”

On the four winners at 5/1 example, the lines return 2,400.00 against a 15.00 stake, so winnings are 2,385.00⁠.

A gap of 1.50 on a 15 unit bet. Trivial once, and not trivial if you settle these regularly or if you scale the unit stake. Take the stake-excluding figure as the working assumption and check the receipt against it, because the general rule is written as a rule of construction while the bet-type page is written as a summary⁠.

There is also a ceiling on the whole thing that people forget exists on a bet capable of returning 147,044.25 from six winners at 5/1⁠:

“The maximum winnings for bonus bets are covered in the categories listed in the maximum winnings section of our General Betting Rules.”

Five conditions that cancel the bonus

The bonus and the consolation are not properties of the bet type. They are a promotion with published qualification terms, and a Lucky 15 that fails any one of these still settles as 15 bets with no extras at all⁠.

“Only one (1) selection per race is allowed.”

“Selections must be either horses or greyhounds at either Starting Price or a William Hill Price.”

“Ante post prices don't qualify for bonuses or consolations.”

“The bet must be of level unit stakes.”

“All selections must run.”

Taken together they narrow the qualifying Lucky 15 sharply. Four horse or greyhound races, one selection in each, no ante-post prices, the same amount on every line, and every one of the four has to come under orders. A football Lucky 15 is a perfectly valid bet at most operators and, under these terms, it is a bet with no bonus⁠.

There is one more exclusion that catches people who mix products⁠:

“Where William Hill advertise bonuses on Yankee, Canadian and Heinz bets, these won't apply to the Lucky 15/31/63.”

Advertised bonuses do not stack across families. A bonus you saw promoted on a Yankee is not available to you because you upgraded the same four selections into a Lucky 15⁠.

Bonus availability also disappears entirely on some products⁠:

“Bets on virtual racing/sports or numbers bets won't qualify for bonuses or consolations if placed on our range of special bets.”

And an acca insurance product will not attach to the bet either⁠:

“Not available for each-way accumulators, SP accumulators, bets placed with free bet tokens or permutation multiples (Yankee, Lucky 15 etc.).”

What a non-runner really does

Of the five conditions, "all selections must run" is the one you cannot control after placing the bet, and it produces the least intuitive result on the page. It does two opposite things at once⁠.

First it improves the settlement. The void leg is removed and every line containing it shortens by one⁠:

“If any selection in any leg is a non-runner or otherwise void under the Sportsbook Rules (e.g. an abandoned match) then all bets on that individual leg will be void and the Fixed Odds Multiple bet shall be adjusted accordingly. For example a treble including one void leg will become a double. If that voided legs mean that an individual bet within a multiple becomes a single bet, then this single bet will stand.”

“For accumulative bets, the stake will run on to the remaining selection/s - with a double becoming a single, a treble becoming a double and so on.”

Trace it through a Lucky 15 where selection D is withdrawn and A, B and C all win at 5/1. The 15 lines do not disappear⁠, they change shape⁠:

Second, it removes the extras. The same event that pushed the return from 342.00 up to 685.00 also disqualifies the ticket from a bonus it could not have won anyway, and, more importantly, from the consolation it might have. A Lucky 15 with two non-runners and exactly one winner among the two that ran gets no doubled odds, because the bet no longer satisfies the qualification term⁠.

That is the asymmetry worth carrying away. A non-runner is good for the maths and fatal to the promotion. A losing selection is bad for the maths and leaves the promotion intact. Most write-ups on this subject treat a non-runner as an unambiguous refund and stop there⁠.

Gross return includes returned stakes from winning components. Profit or loss subtracts the total stake across every component⁠.

It does not add the bonus, apply the doubled-odds consolation, model a non-runner collapse or apply a Rule 4 deduction, because all four of those depend on rules rather than on arithmetic. Take the calculator's figure, then apply the bonus by hand⁠:

1. Subtract the total stake from the calculator's return to get winnings⁠.
2. Check the five qualification conditions above. If any fails⁠, stop here⁠.
3. Four winners from four: add 10 percent of winnings. Five from five: 20 percent. Six from six: 25 percent. Five from six⁠: 10 percent⁠.
4. Exactly one winner: discard the calculator's figure for that line and settle it at double the fractional odds instead⁠.
