Responsible gambling: limits, warning signs and support
If gambling is affecting money, sleep, relationships or mental health, stop now and add barriers before the next bet. Limits can reduce access, but they are not treatment and they do not make gambling safe.
Need urgent mental-health help? Contact your local emergency service. In Indonesia, Healing119 is the Ministry of Health route. Nigeria services can be state or territory specific. Choose the correctly labelled location below. This page is general information, not medical advice.
Four actions to take before another bet
- 01Stop the next transaction
Log out and do not deposit or place another bet to recover a loss. A cooling-off period is useful only if you do not move the same activity to another account.
- 02Protect essential money
Pay bills first, move savings away from gambling access and ask your bank whether it offers a gambling-payment block. Do not borrow to continue.
- 03Add more than one barrier
Use operator self-exclusion, multi-operator exclusion where available and device blocking. A single account closure does not cover other sites.
- 04Tell a person or support service
Share what is happening with someone you trust or a confidential support service. Support is also available for family and friends affected by another person's gambling.
Deposit, spend and loss limits are not interchangeable
The UK Gambling Commission distinguishes deposit, spend and loss limits. Availability and terminology vary by operator and jurisdiction. Check whether a limit covers the whole account, one product or one channel, and when its time window resets.
| Control | What it restricts | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Money transferred into the account. | Gross or net deposits, time window and reset point. |
| Spend or stake limit | Amount staked during the period. | Whether returned stakes can be wagered again. |
| Loss limit | Stakes minus winnings or returns under the stated rule. | The exact loss definition and products covered. |
| Time-out or self-exclusion | Access for a selected period or longer exclusion. | Scope, duration, reopening rules and other accounts. |
Set controls before gambling, not after reaching a target loss. If the goal is to stop, use the account-closure checklist together with broader blocking and self‑exclusion.
Treat harm as a reason to act, not a score to beat
Seek support if gambling is taking money needed for bills, leading to borrowing or chasing losses, being hidden from others, disrupting work or sleep, or causing stress and conflict. You do not need to wait for every sign or a particular assessment score.
Chasing can continue after both losses and wins. Judge the pattern by money, time, secrecy, distress and loss of control, not by the most recent result.
Support and controls by location
Start with Indonesia, Nigeria, Great Britain or global online support as labelled. Lagos SafePlay is not presented as a Nigeria-wide service, and FCT guidance is not presented as national. Operator controls are only one layer.
