Over/Under Football Betting: Goals and Quarter Lines
On a quarter line, the stake is split. For example, over 2.75 is half the stake on over 2.5 and half on over 3.0. The bet365 Goal Line rules retained for this guide publish the equivalent 2.5,3 settlement example; other operators can label or scope the product differently.
The total can be goals, points, games, cards, corners or one player's output. The arithmetic is the same, but the counted period and official data source are not. That is why reading the market label is more important than memorising one sport's convention.

Use 90-minute goals unless the bet slip and operator rules name another period. This resolver does not infer extra time, abandonment or data corrections.
What does over/under mean in betting?
The operator sets a number called the total or line. You choose whether the final counted value will be higher or lower.
The NFL's own betting explainer describes a total as follows:
“Sometimes called an over/under, the bettor puts down a wager on whether or not the total score will be above or below a certain number”
Winner and margin do not matter to a standard game total. A basketball team can lose 111-108 while the over still wins because the combined total is 219. A football team can win 1-0 while under 2.5 wins because the total is one.

A quarter line is two bets hidden behind one label. A 20-unit over 2.75 position is 10 units over 2.5 and 10 units over 3.0. If the match finishes with exactly three goals, the first half wins and the second half pushes. Do not settle it as one ordinary 2.75 line.

The 29-unit quarter-line return is 19 units from the winning 10-unit half and 10 units returned from the pushed half. It is not a full 38‑unit win.
Do overtime and extra time count?
There is no universal answer across sports. The retained NFL source defines a game total and whole-number push, but it does not establish one overtime rule for every North American sport or operator. The cited football rule uses 90 minutes plus stoppage time and excludes extra time unless stated otherwise.
Betfair's published football rules state:
“All bets on soccer markets apply to 90 minutes of play according to the match officials, plus any added injury or stoppage time”
Read the sport-specific rule, not a generic over/under definition. Also check:
- whether an abandoned event is completed inside the operator's time window;
- whether a player must start for a player total to stand;
- whether an official stat correction can change settlement;
- whether shootouts are excluded from football and hockey totals.
A higher hit rate does not make an under valuable
The line and the price form one offer. An under that lands 60% of the time is not automatically attractive if the break-even probability at the offered odds is higher than 60%.
At decimal odds of 1.80:
break-even probability = 1 / 1.80 = 55.56%

Pre-bet checklist
- Write down the exact metric and line.
- Identify whether it is a whole, half or quarter line.
- Confirm which period and overtime rule apply.
- Check the participant, abandonment and official‑data rules.
- Convert the price to break‑even probability.
- Record the line and price you actually accepted.
Gambling should not be treated as income. Set a loss limit before the event starts and do not add a live total simply to recover an earlier result.
Price a score distribution instead of guessing a total
Build a transparent goal estimate, turn it into over and under probabilities, and compare those probabilities with the accepted price.

FAQ
What does over 2.5 mean?
Over 2.5 wins when the counted total is three or more. Because the total cannot finish on half a unit, there is no push.
What happens if an over/under lands exactly on the line?
On a standard whole-number line it is normally a push and the stake is returned. The accepted market rule remains controlling.
Does overtime count in over/under betting?
It depends on the exact sport and market. The cited football rule excludes extra time unless the market states otherwise. Check the sport-specific operator rule rather than inferring it from a generic totals definition.
What is over 2.75?
It splits the stake equally between over 2.5 and over 3.0. Exactly three produces a half win and half push.
Do own goals count toward a football total?
