Use this guide to read a bet slip, not to choose a prediction. The same event can offer several market types, and two bets on the same team can settle differently because the line, time period or number of selections differs.

Market wording and operator rules take priority over a generic definition.

What is a single bet?

A single is one bet on one selection in one market. If the selection wins under the market rules, the bet wins. If it loses, the stake is lost. If the selection is void, the stake is normally returned.

The word "single" does not tell you what you selected. Match result, next goal, total points and a player prop can all be singles. Check these fields:

  • event and competition;
  • market name;
  • selection;
  • accepted odds;
  • stake;
  • market period, such as first half or full time;
  • any handicap or total line.

How do multiples and accumulators work?

A double contains two selections and a treble contains three. An accumulator links four or more selections in common operator terminology. Every required selection normally has to win.

The potential return grows because the prices are multiplied, but the chance of every condition being met falls. A five-leg accumulator is not five independent single bets. One losing leg normally loses the combined stake.

bet365's current settlement guide says a void accumulator selection is normally removed while the remaining selections continue. That is not a rule to transfer blindly to every promotion, insurance feature or same-game product. Read the terms attached to the accepted bet.

What are Trixie, Patent, Yankee and other system bets?

System bets split a group of selections into several smaller bets. Betfair's published definitions show why the total stake can be larger than one unit:

  • a Trixie uses three selections to create three doubles and one treble;
  • a Patent adds three singles to the Trixie structure, for seven bets;
  • a Yankee uses four selections to create six doubles, four trebles and one fourfold;
  • a Canadian uses five selections to create 26 bets without singles.

The name describes the combination structure, not a strategy that improves the underlying prices. Multiply the unit stake by the number of component bets before confirming the total amount at risk.

What does each-way mean?

An each-way bet is two bets:

  1. one part on the selection to win;
  2. one part on the selection to finish in the stated places.

If the slip shows a stake of 5 each way, the total stake is normally 10. The place return uses a fraction of the win odds and a stated number of places. Both can vary by event and by the terms accepted on the receipt.

Do not assume that finishing second always wins the place part. The market may pay one, two, three or more places, and withdrawals can affect the final terms.

What is a handicap bet?

A handicap applies a stated adjustment for settlement. If Team A is selected at +2, two units are added to Team A's score before the market is decided. At -2, two are deducted.

The key distinction is whether the market permits a draw after the adjustment:

  • a three-way handicap can settle as home, draw or away;
  • a two-way spread often uses a half-point line to avoid a draw;
  • an integer two-way line can use a push rule that returns the stake.

Check the sign, number and market format. "Team A handicap" without the line is not enough information to verify the bet.

Totals, both teams to score and correct score

A total compares the counted result with a line. Over 2.5 goals wins when at least three counted goals occur. Under 2.5 wins with two or fewer. A whole number such as 2.0 can have a push rule when the result lands exactly on the line.

Both teams to score asks whether both named teams record a counted goal. It does not require a particular winner. Read the separate both teams to score guide for own-goal and settlement checks.

Correct score requires the exact result under the stated period and rules. A football correct-score market and a tennis set-score market do not use the same unit. The tennis correct-score guide explains that distinction.

What is a Bet Builder or customized bet?

A Bet Builder combines eligible selections from the same event into one bet. The product calculates one price for the combination and accounts for selections that may affect each other. It is not the same as asking an operator to invent any outcome you want.

Betfair's current guide says not every market can be combined and identifies product-specific rules for void legs. Before confirming a custom combination, check:

  • that every selection is shown on the final receipt;
  • the event period, including overtime or extra-time treatment;
  • the combined accepted price;
  • what happens if one leg is void;
  • whether Cash Out is actually available after placement.

Adding more conditions makes the bet more specific. It does not make the combined outcome more likely.

What are back and lay bets?

A back bet supports an outcome. A lay bet takes the other side by betting that the outcome will not happen. Lay betting introduces liability, which can be larger than the amount you expect to win.

Do not treat a lay bet as a negative single without checking:

  • liability;
  • commission;
  • market liquidity;
  • unmatched or partially matched status;
  • reduction factors and settlement rules.

These mechanics are specific to an exchange. A sportsbook single does not create the same counterparty position.

Six checks before confirming any bet type

  1. Read the complete market name.
  2. Count the component bets, not only the selections.
  3. Confirm the total stake after each-way or system multiplication.
  4. Check the accepted odds and any line.
  5. Confirm the time period and void rules.
  6. Save the confirmation receipt and bet ID.

If you already placed the bet, use the bet-slip verification guide to compare the accepted receipt with the final settlement.

Sources and update record

This guide was fact-checked on 27 July 2026 against current Betfair and bet365 help pages. The examples explain common product structures. Operator rules can differ, and the accepted market terms remain the controlling record.

No claim in this guide says that one bet type is profitable. A more complex structure changes how selections and stakes are combined. It does not remove the operator margin or the risk of loss.

Frequently asked questions

What is the simplest type of sports bet?

A single is the simplest structure because it contains one selection. You still need the market name, line, period and accepted price to know what the bet means.

What is the difference between a multiple and an accumulator?

Both link selections. A double has two, a treble has three, and accumulator commonly describes four or more. Every required non-void leg normally has to win.

Why did an each-way bet cost twice the displayed unit?

Each-way contains a win bet and a place bet. A unit entered for each part therefore normally creates a total stake of two units.

Does a handicap change the real match score?

No. It changes only the score used to settle that market. The official event result remains unchanged.
