Football Corner Kick Betting: Totals, Rules and Data Log
The IFAB defines when a corner kick is awarded. Betting rules decide whether a market counts an awarded corner, a taken corner, a retake, extra time or an abandoned match. Read both layers before using historical data.

Resolve a corner total after confirming the official count
Enter the corner count from the operator's named data source. Do not add awarded-but-not-taken corners or retakes unless the cited rules count them.

The arithmetic starts only after the official count is known. Time of award, time taken, retakes, abandonment and extra time remain operator‑specific.

Never combine samples from these markets as if they had the same target. A team can cover its own total while the match total remains under.
Corner settlement checklist
Before collecting a price, record:
- competition and match;
- full match, half or time band;
- awarded versus taken corner treatment;
- retake treatment;
- extra‑time inclusion;
- abandonment and postponement rule;
- source used for the official count;
- line, price and timestamp.
The official bet365 corner-market page publishes market-specific treatment, while Sky Bet's general football rules cover broader period and settlement conditions. These are examples of why the label on the bet slip is not enough. Use the rules for the operator and market actually selected.
Under the retained bet365 example, a corner is measured when it is taken, an awarded corner that is never taken does not count, and an ordered retake counts as one corner rather than two. Those details are source-specific. They must not be projected onto another operator without checking its current rule.
Build a reproducible corner data log
For each match, retain:
- home and away corners by half;
- score and minute of each corner if available;
- shots, blocked shots and attacking entries under one stable definition;
- possession state and red cards;
- pre-match team strength and opponent strength;
- venue, rest days and competition;
- the same source and correction policy for every match.
Do not treat possession as a direct proxy for corners. A team can keep the ball without entering wide or blocked-shot situations, while a counterattacking team can create several corners from fewer attacks. Test each feature against an untouched sample.
Estimate the range, not only the average
Suppose the last ten relevant matches averaged 10.2 corners. That does not make over 9.5 a 50 percent bet. The average does not show how widely counts vary or whether the sample was distorted by one 18‑corner match.
Retain at least:
Median
- What it reveals
- Centre less affected by one extreme match
25th and 75th percentiles
- What it reveals
- Spread of the middle half
Minimum and maximum
- What it reveals
- Tail observations
Share above the proposed line
- What it reveals
- Historical hit rate, not a forecast
Opponent-adjusted estimate
- What it reveals
- Context of the upcoming match
| Diagnostic | What it reveals |
|---|---|
| Median | Centre less affected by one extreme match |
| 25th and 75th percentiles | Spread of the middle half |
| Minimum and maximum | Tail observations |
| Share above the proposed line | Historical hit rate, not a forecast |
| Opponent-adjusted estimate | Context of the upcoming match |
The final forecast should be a probability for each relevant count or line. When the line moves from 9.5 to 10.5, recalculate. Do not reuse the old price decision.
Worked corner-price example
Assume a pre-match model assigns a 54 percent probability to over 9.5 corners under the selected settlement rules.
simple fair decimal price = 1 / 0.54 = 1.8519
At accepted odds of 1.80, the price is below the simple fair estimate. At 1.95, the model estimates a buffer:
estimated expected return per unit = 0.54 x 1.95 - 1 = 0.053
That is an estimated 0.053 units per unit staked before model error and costs. It is not a prediction that the next match will have ten or more corners.
Use the value and ROI calculator to reproduce the price test.
Live corner betting adds state and latency
A live price can change between observation and acceptance. The current score, time remaining, red cards, substitutions and game state can all affect the remaining corner distribution.
Do not project the opening pace linearly. Four corners in the first 20 minutes does not imply 18 across 90 minutes. Update the remaining-time model from the current state and retain the accepted price. If the market suspends or moves, the earlier quote is not an executable result.

- IFAB Law 17: The Corner Kick (opens in a new tab)

Frequently asked questions
What is a corner kicks bet?
It is a wager on a defined corner count, team, handicap, race, time band or sequence under the selected market's settlement rules.
Does an awarded corner always count?
Not necessarily. Published operator rules can distinguish between awarded and taken corners or specify special treatment. Check the exact market.
Does extra time count for corner bets?
Only when the market rules say it does. Do not assume extra time is included.
What do 7+ corners and 6+ corners mean?
On a market explicitly labelled 7+ or 6+, the plus normally means at least seven or at least six corners in the named period. Under the retained bet365 example, the count is based on corners taken, with an untaken award excluded and a retake counted once. Another operator can use a different data source or period, so the receipt and its rule still control.
Is the average corner count enough to price a total?
No. You need the distribution around the average, opponent adjustment and a definition that matches settlement.
Can early corner pace predict the final total?
It is one input, but a linear projection ignores time remaining, score state, red cards, substitutions and changing tactics.
